Utilizing Household Items Weights for Working Out At Home

With the transition to at home workouts, many of us are having to get creative and adapt to the changing circumstances in order to get the most out of our workouts.  We created our virtual fitness TMBatHOME to bring our in-studio TMB workouts to the comforts of your home. While we know that many of you may not necessarily have access to the same equipment that we used to have (such as dumbbells, kettlebells and other fitness equipment), there are several household and everyday items that we can use that are just as effective.

  1. Light Weights
    1. Water bottles, soup/vegetable cans, energy drink cans, small books, etc.
      1. Great for front/lateral raises, bicep/hammer curls, tricep extensions, upright rows, single arm shoulder presses, shadow boxing, straight-leg deadlift, etc.
  1. Medium Weights
    1. Backpack or reusable grocery bag filled with books (or packs of flour and rice), gallon water jugs, medium-sized detergent, plastic olive oil containers, bag of oranges, etc.
      1. Great for back rows, heavier bicep curls/tricep extensions, shoulder presses, squats, lunges, weighted crunch, glute bridge, etc.
  1. Heavy Weights
    1. Paint cans, suitcase filled with clothes or books, large laundry detergent, sack of potatoes, etc.
      1. Great for squats, deadlifts, lunges, rows, step-ups/lunges

When it comes to transforming everyday household items into exercise weights, this list is a great blueprint that you can begin implementing and modifying when starting off. Typically we find that items with handles (backpacks, reusable grocery bags, water jugs, etc) work great as they get very close to replicating dumbbells and kettlebells.

If you’re ready to put these everyday household items into work, join us at TMBatHome for some expertly designed, functional workouts that you can do to stick to your goals from the comfort of your home. We offer both pre-recorded and livestream workouts to making working out from home both fun and effective!
